Cheru Ulli Theeyal

Cheru Ulli Theeyal is one among the Kerala recipes which is most common in all the households. A little spicy, tangy & rich in taste are its qualities. In Kerala this recipe is known in the name of Theeyal, in Tamil nadu this is known as Kolamba but preparation is almost the same. This dish cane be prepared with not only Cheru Ulli/ Shallots but also Pavakya/ Bitter gourd & Chena/ Yam.

Ingredients:

  • Cheruulli/ Shallots – 2cups (chopped)
  • Curry Leaves/ Kadipatha/ Karuvepila – 5leaves
  • Tomato – 1no medium size (finely chopped)
  • Tamarind – 1 ping pong size ball
  • Sugar – 1tsp
  • Coconut Oil – 1tbsp
  • Salt as per taste.

For Seasoning:

  • Rai/ Kadaka/ Mustard seeds – 1tsp
  • Dry Red chilies/ Kollamulaga – 2nos
  • Curry Leaves/ Kadipatha/ Karuvepila – 3leaves
  • Coconut Oil – 1tbsp

For Masala:

  • Grated Coconut – ¼ cup
  • Dhaniya/ Coriander seeds/ Malli – ½ cup
  • Dry Red chilies/ Kollamulaga – 6nos
  • Curry Leaves/ Kadipatha/ Karuvepila – 10 leaves
  • Shallots/ Cheruulli – 5nos
  • Coconut Oil – 1tbsp

Method:

  • Heat a kadai & add all the items listed under Masala. Fry the ingredients in medium flame till coconut turns slight brown in color.
  • Remove it to a plate & keep it aside for cooling. Grind the masala to a fine paste.
  • In a bowl, take ½ cup water & add tamarind ball for 10mins & extract its syrup & keep it aside.
  • In the same kadai, Add oil, shallots, curry leaves & salt. Sauté shallots in medium flame till it become tender.
  • Then add chopped tomato & sauté well till oil oozes out.
  • Add the tamarind syrup & bring it to boil. Add masala paste & little water.
  • Bring theeyal to boil. Add sugar & if required, salt also.
  • Remove it to a deep bottomed vessel.
  • Season Cheru Ulli Theeyal with above mentioned seasoning ingredients.

Goes well with white rice, kuthaari & chapathi.
